Dell Inspiron 1525 HackBook Pro — AMAZING!

July 18th, 2008

Apple / Mac

I bought another laptop at Best Buy after giving my garnet red Gateway to the (idiot) Geek Squad. Want to return a computer to Best Buy? Just say the screen flickers. They’re not going to spend an hour waiting for the momentious occacioun that your laptop actually has an issue. They’re too busy collecting huge fees to run virus scans. I ended up going with a reduced price Dell Inspiron 1525. While the specs are very similar to my Gateway, the CPU is a Pentium Dual Core (Not to be confused with Pentium D) which runs on a slower FSB than my previous Core2 Duo, allowing it to be overclocked nicely.

I’m going to be posting a tutorial on how I got my Inspiron turned into a HackBook Pro, and I’ll also be sharing drivers, files, etc. so you can buy this inexpensive $499.99 laptop at your local electronics store and in about an hour transform it into a portable beast running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4! Stay tuned.

Great choice! My hackbook pro has 2GB RAM and a 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo. Runs like a dream – faster than a 2.4 GHz iMac!

You’ve made an excellent choice. My wife got a 1525 almost precisely two months ago and it’s a really good notebook. If I had to buy one for myself right now, I’d go for the exact same model.

I bought a copy of MacOS off ebay, so that I could feel justified in doing this, hehe. But it failed. I have an Inspiron 1525, and was stoked when I came across this article. After getting everything ready, I booted up to install 10.5.2 and received a lovely message:

    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist not found

It told me to press F8, which I did — tried a few config options that I found on the net, none of them worked so I researched and found information stating it was my installation discs, I lowered my burn rate down to as low as I could go and still no luck.

A few other sites say there might be tweaking in the bios, I’ve tried them all and still have no luck. I’m assuming it has something to do with the controller for my DVD burner, but I can’t be 100% certain. At any rate, thanks — if you have any suggestions let me know!
