It happened in a matter of hours from its official release from Apple, Mac OS X 10.5.3, the latest major release of Leopard has been hacked to run on your average PC using a special kernel to bypass special restrictions. Major build releasers such as JaS and Kalyway have already put out Combo Updates which will convert your Hackintosh to the latest version of Mac OS X Leopard which introduces a bunch of new features including upgraded drivers, over 200 bug fixes, and a new 9.3.0 kernel.
Files are currently being downloaded from various popular torrent sites including bay of plundering and green little demon. You know what I mean! I’ll post my success (or failire) of upgrading my current 10.5.2 Kalyway Hackintosh to the latest 10.5.3 using the now widely available 10.5.3 Kalyway Combo Update that hit the green this afternoon…
UPDATE!
It all works, smooth as glass. Just follow Kalyway’s instructions and be sure that you don’t have any old kernel boot entries in your /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist. My kernel went from “tohkernel” (Old 9.2.0, from my 10.5.2 Combo Update), to “mach_kernel” (9.3.0, included in 10.5.3 Combo Update) and I set to timeout to 5 seconds because I hate waiting. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the below screenshot is money in the bank. At least for me.
May 22nd, 2009 at 10:15 AM
I instaled Kalyway 10.5.2 without problems, then after I tried the combo update I rebooted
and my screen is divided in two, right half black, left half part of the Mac os desktop, I guess it has something to do gith the graphics kext.
Does anyone knows how to fix it? I’m running Dell 1525, Dual core 2 duo, Chipset GM965
3D Accelerator GMA X3100

Huge leap forwards yesterday as I FINALLY got the battery meter working! Not sure what I did wrong when trying all the various methods that are floating around, but I finally worked out the necessary versions of the necessary kexts/bundles from various forums and got it working!
So, if you want to have a go at this, here’s a step-by-step of what I did. Now, I must point out that this may not work for you and could possibly screw your installation, so BACKUP with TimeMachine (or whatever) before you try it. My laptop is a Dell 1525, bought in the UK in January 2009. I got this working on XxX 10.5.6, so I don’t know if it will work on anything other than XxX 10.5.6, but I imagine it will (well, you’re going to backup anyway, right?).
I’ve uploaded the necessary files to a website, as, after all the various forums I visited, I can’t actually remember where I got them. In fact, they may well be the same ones as Richard’s, but I don’t have time to compare them.
1. Download PowerManagement.bundle.tar (version 136.0.0) from here: http://www.swampfoetus.net/downloads/PowerManagement.bundle.tar
2. Download AppleACPIPlatform.kext.tar (version 1.1.0) from here: http://www.swampfoetus.net/downloads/AppleACPIPlatform.kext.tar.
3. Extract both of the above files (double-click them in finder).
4. Start a Terminal session.
5. Type “sudo su –“ and enter your root password to become the root user.
6. Type “cd /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/”
7. Type “mv PowerManagement.bundle PowerManagement.bundle_backup” i.e. take a backup.
8. Copy in the one you downloaded at step 1, so, depending on what user you downloaded the file as, type “cp –R ~/Downloads/PowerManagement.bundle ./” Here, should be replaced with the username you download the file as.
9. Type “cd /System/Library/Extensions/”
10. Type “mv AppleACPIPlatform.kext AppleACPIPlatform.kext_backup” i.e. take a backup
11. Open KextHelper and drag-and-drop the downloaded AppleACPIPlatform.kext into it.
12. Open Disk Utility and click “Repair Disk Permissions”. (I got a load of “…permissions differ…” messages and ignored them.)
13. Reboot with –v –f
14. Open System Preferences and go to Energy Saver. Fingers crossed, you should have a load of new stuff in this window. Click the Options tab and tick Show battery status in the menu bar.
Well, I really hope this works for you. Let me know your successes.
I’m posting this to all the blogs, as Batter Meter problems are mentioned in all of them.
P.S. It’s my birthday tomorrow so, as a gift, could someone get my hibernation working? It’s the only thing left that I need working!

Never got very far with the Dell workstations, though the Compaq Evo did *somewhat* work — it was nothing amazing. no QE/CI, very slow, etc. I’m eager to see how your “SC” turns out. Feel free to keep me updated, send pictures, etc. :-)

Hi Richard
I have a Dell Poweredge 1600SC and i’m pretty interesting in hearing anything about your 400SC. The problem is that my drives are on a RAID card … and I dunno if i’ll be able to install Hackintosh on it.
Any ideas?

Always keep a backup of your kernel. I keep several different kernels on my laptop for various testing and debugging reasons. To back up your existing kernel, open Terminal and type ‘sudo su -‘ then enter your user password. Now type ‘cd /’ and if you know your kernel name, type ‘cp kernel_name kernel_backup_name’ and you’re in business.

This is a fresh install of Kalyway 10.5.2, then updating it immediately to 10.5.3. so i do not have a working kernal that i was using before.
when i updated using the vanilla kernal, i kept getting an error that would not start OSX. when i installed the other kernal that is given, everything is working except for the menu’s populating with their options.
Do i need to backup a kernal on 10.5.2 before i update to 10.5.3? if so, how do i do this? thank you for your help Rich!!
October 14th, 2008 at 11:34 AM
It sounds like you’re booting with the wrong kernel. Always create a backup of your “old” working kernel to boot from in a situation like this.
October 13th, 2008 at 5:22 PM
I am having a problem once i install the 10.5.3 Update successfully using the other kernal (not vanilla) that is given with the update. This update is on a fresh, formatted copy of 10.5.2 and i keep getting this error. I am unable to see ANY of my menus on the top left. under FILE, EDIT, VIEW, EVERYTHING, i am unable to see anything. i can still click on the menu and it will select the item that is there, however the menu appears blank and you cannot see any menu options. Please help, is this something that is wrong with the Kernal? or kext? please advise cause your help will be greatly apprecaited.

Hi there – finally took the plunge to upgrade to 10.5.3 from 10.5.2 as I have got Spore and it needs 10.5.3. Ran update, chose modbin kernel and rebooted. Now my network card is showing as cable disconnected even though it ain’t and the light is on…….very odd. For ref I have a Dell Optiplex 320 which worked absolutely flawlessly on 10.5.2. If anyone know how to get this resolved please let me know!
Cheers

Hi
I am trying to install kalyway 10.5.2 on my Sony Vaio VGN-CR35G (T8100 processor, 2 GB Ram, ATI Radeon Mobility X2300, Intel 4965, Bluetooth, Realtek Sound, Sony built-in webcam, Texas Instruments PCIxx12 card reader, connexant modem) on USB Flash disk. Had to install many times due to some goof ups by me. The problem faced are:
1. No wifi support at all.
2. Graphics only 1024 X 768
3. Sometimes sound card is detected and sometimes not. When sound card is detected, no mike
4. TI PC Card reader not detected at all
5. HP PCMCIA Bluetooth mouse is detected, but not connected sometimes.
6. Web cam not detected at all.
7. Only one core is detected.
Any Help will be highly appreciated.

I installed combo update, it worked well, but after updation itunes with mac update and reboot ir tells, that the kernel version doesnt mach, that i have 9.2.0 kernel instead of 9.3.0
Is there a kernel name for kalyways updated kernel to boot from darwin prompt manually?
June 28th, 2008 at 6:29 AM
somebody tell me if kalyway 10.5.2 work well on pentium 4 ht 3.2 ghz ( wich kernel can i use )
ok thanx
June 28th, 2008 at 9:49 AM
Download it and find out. It’s only about 3-4GB. It supports both SSE2 and SSE3 so you should be fine.
June 27th, 2008 at 8:21 PM
Everything solved!
After some time the problem was solved automatically…. I used the command . update -v . a couple of times and at last (I believe after the third boot) everything became normal.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:54 PM
Outstanding! :-)
I’m in the process of ordering parts for my next Hackintosh. Core2 Duo build with all the goodies for under $300 shipped and I’m not talking about third rate parts. More to come on that in my next blog posts.
June 27th, 2008 at 5:50 PM
Thanks for quick reply Richards!.
What I’ve done was Install: Kalyway 10.5.2 for Intel SSE3 only
Worked excellent and even installed automatically the EFIv8
Afterwards I installed Kalyway 10.5.3 Combo Update with modkernel (NOT the Vanilla one) . What happened afterwards was that>
1st: monitors starts showing very rapidly HFs+ …. HFS+.. HFS+ ..etc (like the movie Matrix)
then 2nd: the matrix stops and starts showing yellow warnings like something not loaded…. etc..(something like autorecover)
then 3rd: goes normaly and enter leopard as if nothing happened.
The matter is a bit annoying so if you just got any sugestion would be great (is it possible to recover my 9.2.0 kernel or it is better to stay with my 9.3.0)….. Apart from that everything runs smoothly
June 26th, 2008 at 1:31 PM
Francisco,
EFI isn’t a requirement. You can continue to use your own hacked kernel or the supplied hacked mach_kernel to bypass EFI and boot your Pentium D computer.
June 26th, 2008 at 1:20 PM
Is EFI a requirement for installing “Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.3 Kalyway Combo Update” ??

Thanks Richard,
That’s great news. If you would like for me to add my machine to the list of Betas let me know. It’s a custom build and I’ll gladly share specs if you are interested.
June 24th, 2008 at 9:12 AM
Mac OS X releaser “JaS” is working on an SSE2 install DVD for Leopard. While I’ve been unable to get his beta to run on a 400MHz FSB, he has had success with 10.5.3 on everything down to a 1.8GHz P4 (SSE2). I will be posting it here as soon as it is released as I’m beta testing his release with a few different SSE2 machines, including a Dell Poweredge 400SC (2.8GHz P4 HT), a Compaq Evo D500 (1.8GHz P4), and a Dell Dimension 2400 (2.6GHz Celeron).
I’ll keep you guys posted in the coming weeks of this release.

In case you are wondering its a P4 2.4 Gig Northwood processor.
June 24th, 2008 at 12:25 AM
Hey Richard,
Any luck on those SSE2 Kernels? I’m new to the Mac scene and I am trying to get a version to work with some older hardware to make sure I like it before purchasing a whole new rig for my Mac machine. I’ve currently been reading lots of forums and have tried both Kalyway 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 both with reboot issues immediately before (or at least what I think is) the installer screen.
I would love to get my hands on a modified kernel that made my newbie install a little easier until I get a handle on all of the kext files etc.
Let me know if you have had any progress or if you might be able to share some words of wisdom for older SSE2 only machines.
Thanks,
Jonas
June 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 AM
Anonymous,
You’re going to want to select the hacked kernel, not vanilla, to boot your Intel Pentium 4 (SSE3). I have a SSE3 Prescott Celeron and I’m using it.
June 23rd, 2008 at 9:47 AM
Be sure to take the DVD (or CD, if you’ve grabbed the multi-disc version) out of your computer before you press F8 and run ‘update -v’. Once run, it will go through the normal process and reboot itself into a working installation. It doesn’t get much easier if you just follow the instructions in the archive.
June 23rd, 2008 at 2:23 AM
So, first time, I got stuck on spinning wheel…Reinstalled system. Just to clarify for myself..I’ve got a P4 with SSE3 (Prescott), so i select the modbin kernel?
June 21st, 2008 at 1:10 PM
For those with post-installation issues: i had the same ‘PCGenUSBEHCI’ problems and also the problem where, in the GUI, the loading icon would appear but never actually load. For me this appeared to be a problem with RAID and AHCI. I wont pretend to know what i’m talking about, but disabling RAID in my bios fixed the issue. Afterwards I simply ran an update -v and 10.5.3 booted right up
June 21st, 2008 at 12:04 PM
Also will this fix the sound problem it had on 10.5.2?
June 21st, 2008 at 11:56 AM
So this update is for people with 10.5.2 Kalyway? By meaning people who have “windows” computer but get os x on it right?
June 19th, 2008 at 11:26 AM
i am a newbie to Mac. is it possible to release a brand new Mac OS X like KALYWAY LEOPARD 10.5.3 intel SSE2 and SSE3.
the update is killing me, losing sleep trying :)
June 16th, 2008 at 1:25 PM
Hi, just wondering how to go about this. IU am using a Dell Optiplex 755, and installed Kalyway 10.5.2 without much problem (no sound and no internal network card, and this being a quad core machine it only reports to be a dual core).
Is this where the Kernel comes in?! Which one should I be using?!
Any help much appreciated…
June 14th, 2008 at 2:58 AM
alex,
Try running ‘update -v’ again, and if it keeps spinning, keep it on there for about 15 minutes then boot as normal (follow the instructions) and it should work.
June 13th, 2008 at 8:58 AM
i tried this update to my kalyway 10.5.2 installation….and i do the first step then i do the second step and when i reboot that i type in update -v….it takes me to a screen with the apple logo in the middle and in the bottom the litle revolving circular thing like if it was loading…but it stays there…is there anything i can do to fix this?
June 11th, 2008 at 10:03 PM
hey guys no luck for me after i update and do everything that the info said and restart. the computer, it just keep restarting can anyone tell me what the problem is?
June 11th, 2008 at 8:16 PM
Please note that this does not work correctly under an SSE2 CPU as it states. Please run CPU-Z to determine your CPU type (Windows) before you install. I am working on testing a few different SSE2-specific releases of 10.5.2 and 10.5.3 for the older PC’s which will include most Pentium 4 and Pentium 4 Mobile chips.
Stay tuned! :-)
June 11th, 2008 at 7:49 PM
I´m currently using Kalyway mac os x 10.5.2.
I tried to install the released Mac os X 10.5.3 combo update, however, after my two tries the video driver looks like no compatible anymore.
I just got a zebra like screen. Unfortunately the update did not work on my 945GM intel on board.
The 10.5.2 works just fine.
I have tried to install only the main file without the kernel update. I´m using the Vanilla 92. The problem was the same, loose the video drive I guess.
June 11th, 2008 at 5:47 PM
Hi! I have a problem after update, didn’t restar, first install kernel.pkg. ’til then everything was ok.
Restart normally with -v but now there’s a yellow alert that says “failed to load extension com.orByte.driver.PCGenUSBEHCI” and something else I don’t remember.
Restart again, now with -v -x, now there’s just that alert of the com.orByte.driver.PCGenUSBEHCI.
I have an Asus P5K-E WIFIAP motherboard. I try this over a fresh install of Kalyway 10.5.2 with vanilla kernel and EFI on a GUID partitioned SATA drive set to AHCI. Everything was working fine, Audio, LAN, Video was 8800GTS 320MB with GFX string working well. If anyone can help me…
I’m lost here. Try boot from DVD ROM and repairPermissions but didn’t workout. Forgive my english, I speak spanish.
June 8th, 2008 at 3:04 AM
very nice,
just installed it on my dell gx280 with no trouble all went smooth,
thank you for you package seeding it for a few days.
Enjoy and thank u again ^^
June 3rd, 2008 at 4:50 PM
Jenderal,
This sounds like a corrupted installation or bad DVD. Try launching without “update -v” and see if your normal kernel panics as well.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:48 PM
My Broo Why I Can’t Update My Kalyway 10.5.2 to 10.5.3.
after Update And restart if I type “Update -v” I got Kernel Panics.
What Happen? any Sollution. what Do I Wrong???
Sorry My English Bad.

By the way, now that I’ve gotten her up and running. Has anyone noticed that their video seems to be a bit choppy? Especially when resizing windows and using coverflow. It was a lot smoother before the udpate. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. BTW its an nVidia 7300gs
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:00 AM
Hello, perhaps I’m just dense and its ok to say so, I’ll probably agree after the debacle I put myself through. But for us newbie OSX users who have crawled out of the dungeons of torture in the windows world I just wanted to clarify one piece of the instructions. It was a crucial thing I was missing. Kalyway’s command instructions are dead on, however where those commands are inputed is another thing entirely. First, I’ve only been able to see the F8 option when the CD is in the drive and striking it then will boot you to a prompt on the disc not the HD. During normal HD booting just hit any key to get to the “boot:” prompt. You don’t get a “Root” prompt. I relied on the little bit of unix commands I could remember to get to an actual bash prompt with -s which funny enough did produce a “root” prompt. However that was way further than I needed to go. Simply inputing Kalyways “update -v” at the “boot:” prompt got everything up and running. I know this sounds like a total “Duh” moment but I’m completely bald and was still finding hair to tear out. Just thought I’d contribute.
June 2nd, 2008 at 6:15 AM
godey,
I had the same problem as you and fixed it by replacing the new nvidia files with the ones from 10.5.2.
The file are GeForce*.kext and NVD*.kext
Hope this helps.
June 2nd, 2008 at 1:54 AM
Same problems as godey, no transparency on the menu bar and no screen savers working. My dock’s a little bit slow when it pops up too.

godey,
I’m not sure. I’d search the Apple-related forums for information on how to uninstall a Combo Update. The legitimate and official instructions should work for Kalyway’s 10.5.3 Combo Update. If you find what you’re looking for, feel free to post it here for the real Mac users, too.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:16 PM
Hello! Is there a way i can uninstall this update if i do not have time machine active. I dont have any spare drive so time machine is not an option. It kinda screwed up the transparent menu bar, most screen saver don work now and i cant watch videos anymore. Before this update i had a perfect hackintosh

I run a web development company. Enough said. :)

Hi. I’ve successly install Kalyway 10.52. on a XFX nForce 680i LT SLI motherboard with a Duo 2 Quad 6600 processor, 2gb of ram and a Gforce 7300gs video card. I’m using IT for FCP. I want to fix a problem before I upgrade to 10.5.3. If I boot with all 4 cores the mouse freeze after a few minutes of inactivity but other process seem to continue to work such as a CPU test, back ground screens etc. When I boot using only 2 cores it works like a charm and never freezes. Any ideas for a fix? Thanks.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:18 AM
Bullshit. All these methods fuck up my computer. I use the flat file install method and every update royally screws it
May 31st, 2008 at 9:36 AM
Hi there,I’ve installed the upgrade without a glitch on the kalyway 10.5.1 and then I went to the Apple
website just to check for more updates without downloading them.On rebooting just after the BIOS screen faded away I’ve got an very strange error message:”ERROR:CPU fan has failed.PC will automaticlly power down in a few seconds.Service PC imediately to prevent danger to CPU.”Since then
the machine won’t boot and switches off again and again. It’s a ASUS P5LP -LEontine.INTEL core2 duo
E6420 2.13GHz.INTEL 945G.GEFORCE 7500LE.Realtek 8169,this board is used on HP Pavilion Media
Center m8080 here in Europe. The way the error message is written one can be pretty sure that it’s not\from from the manufacturer.I’ve changed the fan but the problem won’t go away.
I would appreciate any help and may God bless you all! Thanks a lot.

I don’t use iPhoto so I’m not certain. This is the first mention of iPhoto being broken that I know about so maybe it’s an isolated issue.
j, SSE2 support is unknown at this time for 10.5.3 (Kalyway). Maybe try a different release?
May 30th, 2008 at 11:26 PM
Is anyone having problems with iphoto since the update? When I select a photo and try to enlarge it to edit, the program crashes. I tried rebuilding my library…same problem. Tried reinstalling iphoto…same problem. Any ideas?
thanks

Hi,
I tried installing this as per the instructions and am stuck at the gray apple screen. I accidentally installed both kernels…do you think this is my problem? I am using a Q6600 intel quad core processor and used the vanilla kernel for the 10.5.2 update which worked fine. Help please!

PieterB,
What all did you remove before you installed NVInstaller? Please paste what you’ve done so others can follow! Thanks.
May 30th, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Did not work. I got it working with NVInstaller41. Removed al NV-related packets and OpenGL Framework first. I’ve also tried NVKush.
Hacking is always some trial-and-error. I first try the (great) tools made by the community, then terminal/shell if necessary. :-)
May 30th, 2008 at 10:02 AM
This is from Kalyway’s README on the 10.5.3 Combo Update:
kalyway hackintosh10.5.3 combo update for sse3 intel only !
READ Carefully !!!!
1- install comboupdate ! don’t restart !
2- install kalyway kernel pkg ! choose kernel you need for your pc ! (if you want keep your old 9.2 kernel so install this pkg without selecting 9.3 kernel !!!)
3- reboot and type update -v and cross the fingers !
if you stuck at bsd root after reboot ! so type “update -v” without quote at f8 darwin prompt ! it should work !
caution : you may experienced boot problem related to gfx card ! especially with 7xxx nvidia series and ati ! if happen type -v -x
try this update at you own risk !!!!
May 30th, 2008 at 9:57 AM
I tried reinstalling (0.2.1) + script for setting permissions. It doesn’t work. Do you have a link to complete instructions? thx!
May 30th, 2008 at 9:25 AM
Try installing/re-installing NVInject as per Kalyway’s instructions and it should fix your CI/QE.
May 30th, 2008 at 9:17 AM
Forgot to mention I use 10.5.3 now :-), without the CI/QE
May 30th, 2008 at 9:16 AM
Ok, installation went good but I’ve got some strange problems.
QE not working, I wented back to 10.5.2 with the Kalyway Leopard DVD.
But still no QE. (I use a 8400GS on my hackintosh)
Then I had another problem: Safari and Disk Utility (maybe some other programs too) wouldn’t start. I’ve copied these from my macbook with official 10.5.3, now they work again.
I only need to correct the Quartz Extreme and Core Image acceleration. Time to use these GFX strings I think :-)
May 30th, 2008 at 6:51 AM
Thanks for the correction, PieterB. I was rather tired after a long day at the office when I put this update into effect. The correct path has been noted above.
May 30th, 2008 at 2:02 AM
Downloading right now.
Will update after installing, thx for the news! (And comments on bay)
Small correction com.apple.Boot.plist is
in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
May 29th, 2008 at 11:19 PM
Hey mate!
Thanks for the screens. I trust Kalyway but a second opinion is always welcome.
I’ll let you know how it goes once I finally get it.
